The best time to visit Morocco and the best seasonal activities

Morocco is one of those special trips, the kind of life experience that leaves something unique inside you. It’s a mystical destination, an adventure in a country that is geographically so close to Europe, yet so far away in history and culture. Those who have never experienced Morocco can’t understand it, and those who have been lucky enough to do so can’t put it into words.

It’s no coincidence that it’s one of the top destinations recommended by travel guides for anyone wanting an unusual trip outside Europe. Sure, but when? What’s the best time to visit Morocco, in my opinion, and what are the main seasonal activities to enjoy in this magnificent country?

When is the best time to travel to Morocco? Climate and temperatures

Pinning down the best time to visit Morocco isn’t easy. That’s because in recent years the country has seen a series of sudden seasonal changes, with resulting swings in temperature and weather. Although temperatures are, on average, similar to those in Southern Europe and roughly follow the same seasons, the weather has become increasingly changeable and unpredictable.

Morocco actually has several climate zones, depending on the regions you plan to visit. The western coastal area, kissed by the Atlantic Ocean, has a temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers, and it can be windy in some areas. In the north, paradoxically, the water gets warmer thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean Sea, so the northern coast has mild, rainy winters but hot summers.

The inland areas, home to the imperial cities, are even hotter: hot summers, cool winters and little rain. In the mountains, temperature swings are very significant: fairly warm summers and very harsh winters, with snowfall too. Finally, the south is the hottest part of the country, the Sahara Desert and the areas around it: June to September are the months to avoid.

So, regardless of personal taste and your choice of itinerary, it’s impossible to say for certain and objectively that one time is better than another: very often it’s chance that determines the quality of your experience in Morocco. That said, some times are clearly better than others overall.

What to do in Morocco in spring

Spring is, together with fall, the best season of all to visit Morocco. Spring offers an unforgettable experience to most travelers, with a mix of culture, history, nature and adventure.

To begin with, the climate is mild and the days are cool and long: ideal for anyone who wants to explore on foot and dive into the hidden heart of ancient cities like Marrakech, Fez and Chefchaouen. These temperatures also make the local markets, with their fresh produce and aromatic spices, much more pleasant, and even the oases of the Sahara Desert become enjoyable and manageable with no health risks. Not to mention the natural landscapes, which literally fill up with bright, vibrant flowers.

So between March and May, Morocco offers activities and experiences of every kind: from the sea to the mountains, from the interior to the desert. We can put together a truly varied tour.

What to do in Morocco in summer

Because of the high temperatures, which can even exceed 40°C (104°F), many people advise against visiting Morocco in summer. However, this country offers plenty of experiences in this season too, mostly along the ocean.

That’s right: in summer, coastal towns are the most popular with foreign visitors to Morocco. Most of the Moroccan coast is washed by the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean, in places like Agadir and Essaouira, where beach lovers can cool off and relax. Excursions and diving trips to discover nature’s secrets are also popular here, as well as classic surfing and rafting experiences.

Likewise, summer in Morocco sends the more adventurous to the highest mountains, in search of cooler temperatures and the most beautiful views. The Atlas Mountains are among our favorites in this respect, without forgetting the Sahara Desert: contrary to what many people think, summer evenings are perfect for desert excursions and for fully enjoying nature’s spectacles.

Visiting the imperial cities, on the other hand, is absolutely not recommended.

What to do in Morocco in fall

Just like in Southern Europe, fall is a season quite similar to spring, at least in terms of average temperatures. It’s the busiest time in Morocco. It’s the ideal time to visit the cities and to take part in cultural festivals and local events: the busiest urban centers come back to life, by day and by night, pleasantly refreshed by perfect weather.

Mountain excursions are still doable, as are trips to the desert, where the sunsets are at their most spectacular. Fall is therefore a great season for those who don’t want to hold back and aim to see every side of Morocco, from the historical and cultural to the natural and scenic.

In my experience, October is by far the most beautiful month to visit Morocco and enjoy every kind of experience: from the imperial cities to excursions along the ocean, from mountain landscapes to adventurous treks.

What to do in Morocco in winter

Here we need to bust another myth right away: in winter, there’s snow in Morocco too. The weather won’t be as harsh as in Northern Europe (in the cities it rarely drops below 0°C / 32°F), but the cities start to empty out and the mountains fill up with winter sports lovers; the Oukaimeden ski resort is very popular. As a result, though, it also becomes much easier to visit the cities, although it’s important to always check the forecast, as it can rain often in the north.

The deserts in the south get colder, so it’s best to plan daytime excursions, although the starry skies at night are something magical. Plus, the many religious holidays and local music events warm up the atmosphere, adding a touch of authenticity to the country.

Morocco’s geographical uniqueness, much like Italy’s, is this: thanks to such varied and complete terrain, it has absolutely everything. Clearly, in terms of weather and climate the best times to travel to Morocco are spring and fall, but in reality this magical place offers a truly one-of-a-kind life experience in every season of the year.
