Surfing in Morocco: a journey through the Atlantic waves

For years Morocco has been one of the favorite destinations for surfers from all over the world. A quick online search told me there are more than 35 million surfers worldwide, and North Africa, especially Morocco’s Atlantic coast, has become a much sought-after spot for anyone looking for good waves, even better when they come with a mild climate all year round and a fascinating culture.

With more than 3,500 km (about 2,200 miles) of coastline along the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Morocco lets you surf whether you’re experienced or a beginner. Of course, this sport has to be approached safely, and my job is to give you all the information you need and help you plan a surf-focused tour, an adrenaline-filled sport that combines nature and culture.

Where to surf in Morocco

Morocco has several coastal spots that are best for surfing, each with its own features. Let’s get to know them.

Essaouira: surf and wind

Essaouira is one of the cities I include on almost all my tours, because it’s truly worth a visit. Its medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and there are plenty of cultural places to visit and spots to relax. Its airport also has good connections with Italy and the main European cities, so if you fly into Essaouira you’ll find a private driver, always included in my tours, to take you around the city or to the beach you’ve chosen for surfing.

Essaouira is mainly known as a surf destination on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Famous for its steady wind (especially between April and September), the town is perfect for kitesurfing and windsurfing as well as classic surfing. On some beaches in particular, like Sidi Kaouki and Essaouira Beach, the waves are moderate and suitable for beginners.

Imsouane: the bay with Morocco’s longest wave

Between Essaouira and Agadir, Imsouane is a small fishing village that became famous for its iconic The Bay, considered one of the longest right-hand waves in the world. Perfect for longboarders and anyone who loves riding long, gentle waves, Imsouane bay is a paradise for surfers who enjoy the sport at a relaxed, authentic pace.

Travelers also love the village for its laid-back spirit: a few hotels, professional surf schools and a welcoming community make Imsouane ideal for full immersion in the surf lifestyle.

Taghazout: Morocco’s surf capital

Taghazout is without doubt the most famous surf destination in Morocco. About 20 km (12 miles) north of Agadir (where the airport is), this small town is a landmark for surfers of every level, especially experienced ones, thanks to its powerful, hollow waves.

In recent years Taghazout has seen major tourist development focused on surfing, with many surf camps, dedicated hostels, panoramic bars and yoga retreats. If you go between October and April, the ocean delivers big, consistent and spectacular waves.

Dakhla: surf and kitesurf near the Sahara

For a truly unique surf experience, Dakhla, in Morocco’s deep south, is a must, and it has its own airport. Overlooking a turquoise lagoon between the desert and the Atlantic, Dakhla is world-famous for kitesurfing, but it’s also perfect for surfing, especially in the winter months.

The best-known surf beaches are Foum Labouir and La Sarga, where long, regular waves tempt intermediate and advanced surfers. Thanks to its remote location, Dakhla also offers unspoiled nature, perfect for anyone who wants to switch off completely and experience the ocean in its simplest form.

Surfing in Morocco? Yes, but always safely

Whatever adventure you’re about to embark on, anywhere in the world, it’s always important to do it safely. There can be many risks in the water, which is why it’s important to choose carefully how and where to surf so you can enjoy the experience without unpleasant surprises.

Naturally, my first tip is to go with certified instructors. Another obvious one: if the weather forecast isn’t great, it’s much better to postpone your surf session rather than go into the sea in unfavorable conditions.

As for choosing a beach, since some have very powerful waves and rocky seabeds, it’s best to start at beaches like Imsouane or Sidi Kaouki, better suited to beginners, with weaker side currents.

Clothing and gear also make a big difference to the quality of your surf experience. In some areas and months the Atlantic can be very cold, so it’s essential to wear a suitable wetsuit and use well-tested boards. You can rent wetsuits, boards and other accessories locally, since almost every spot has surf shops. There are also many schools where you can sign up for a surf course with certified instructors.

Finally, never go surfing alone: always surf with others, with an instructor or, at the very least, let someone know before you go into the water.

Surfing in Morocco: an experience you’ll remember

A surf trip to Morocco isn’t just about sport. It’s an immersion in the culture, flavors and nature of a country full of contrasts. Ocean sunrises, colorful markets, steaming tagines after a long day in the water and desert sunsets will make your experience (I probably don’t even need to say it) unforgettable.

If you’re an experienced surfer looking for a challenge, I recommend going to Morocco between October and April, when the waves are more powerful, especially in Taghazout and Imsouane. For beginners and kitesurfers, I recommend May to September, when the winds are stronger, especially in Essaouira and Dakhla.

In short, whatever your level, Morocco has everything a surfer could want to make their surf trip an exciting, fun, safe and culturally immersive experience.
